About this legendary Soleil Royal model

Now you can create a superb 1:70 scale replica of one of the 17th century’s most famous ships, an amazingly accurate model to build from wood and metal.
The Soleil Royal was one of the most beautiful and elegant ships of the Baroque era, awe-inspiring and loaded with deadly weapons of war. Named in honour of France’s King Louis XIV, known as ‘the Sun King’, the ship was launched in 1669. At over 60 metres long, she was armed with up to 104 guns, spread over three decks, which are faithfully reproduced in your model.

The ship’s legend lived on until the Revolution of 1789 – until then the name Soleil Royal was frequently used for France’s capital ships. A large and detailed model of the ship at 1:40 scale, built in 1839, is now on display in the National Navy Museum in Paris.

The rigging that was such a vital part of the 17th century warships is faithfully reproduced to scale with fine cotton thread of the correct size and weight.
The ship’s elaborate statues and carved decorations on the stern, including the sun symbol that represented the French King, are reproduced in cast metal for complete accuracy.
The sails that propelled the Soleil Royal into battle are reproduced in fabric for added authenticity.
